China:Red Revenue Small One Dollar Surcharge (Used)
With the official inauguration of the Imperial Post of the Qing Dynasty in 1896, the tael system of postage rates was replaced by the silver dollar system. Because of urgent demand for the new denominations, the Customs Statistical Department surcharged the unused 3-cents Red Revenue Stamps of 3-cents with various denominations to meet the demand. They were issued on February 2, 1897.
The Red Revenue Small One Dollar Surcharge is the first surcharged stamp among the red revenue stamps surcharged for postal use. The postal authorities thought the typeface of the characters surcharged were too small for use, so they changed them into large figures after only a small number of the first surcharges were produced.
There exist 30 pieces of Red Revenue Small One Dollar Surcharge, and most of them are unused. Now only one used stamp cancelled with PaKua Cancellation was found. This is a unique rarity internationally renowned and the top treasure of China National Post and Postage Stamp Museum.
